– An unconventional yet effective method of losing weight in long term for those who are unable to reduce weight by diet & exercise.

Obesity is considered as a serious health issue in India. Obesity can be life threatening and can lead to severe diseases like hypertension, type II diabetes, coronary heart diseases, respiratory problems, stroke & many more severe aliments. For some people it is tough to reduce weight in conventional method of dieting & working out. The solution in such case can be Bariatric Surgery – surgical procedures to reduce weight in a long term.

Recently a middle aged woman from Siliguri who was overweight got herself operated with bariatric procedure at Neotia Getwel Multispecialty Hospital, Siliguri in the skilled hands of Dr. Bijendra Kr Sinha, Sr. Consultant – GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgeon of the hospital. She weighed 110 kgs with the height of 4 feet 9 inches. Her BMI (Body Mass Index) was 55 which is considered way too high even in bariatric surgery. She was suffering from uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, sleep apnoea, feeling sleepy during day time, and extreme difficulty in walking due to obesity; she had to take the help of a walker. She had to take 100 units of insulin every day to control her blood sugar level and BiPAP support every night to get sound sleep. Losing weight was the only answer to all her prevalent health issues.

After OPD consultation with Dr. Sinha, she decided for laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery, a bariatric or weight losing surgical procedure in which the size of the stomach is divided to make it 60 ml only. As a result of this, appetite & the capability of consuming food reduces gradually.  Apart from this, the procedure is known to remove hunger cells in the stomach that secrete ghrelin, the ‘hunger hormone’ & as a result of this the person loses her / his weight. These same hormonal changes also help relieve conditions associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure or heart disease.

The surgery went successfully & she got discharged 2 days after the surgery. She lost almost 10 kilo weight after the surgery. Her insulin intake has been stopped & BiPAP support while sleeping is no longer needed after the surgery.  Post-surgery during her first visit to the hospital she was even able to walk by her own without any walker support.

“Diet and exercise alone, no matter how disciplined the individual is, fail overwhelmingly often.  Advice about diet and exercise often has a moral undertone while surgery has a mechanistic one. In her case, health risks associated with obesity were also becoming more & more obvious. She already had type 2 diabetes. There were also higher rates of stroke and heart disease and an increased risk of certain cancers. She was not able to lose weight even after diet and thus, surgery was only the solution”, said Dr. Sinha, the senior consultant – GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgeon who was previously associated with Fortis & Max Hospital, Gurgaon.

Life style modification, dietary habits to be more disciplined after bariatric surgery. As per Dr. Sinha, seven years of life expectancy will be added after bariatric surgery.

“Half my life has been about trying to lose weight and controlling blood sugar. I tried different weight losing diet regimen. I even stopped consuming rice & sweet foods years ago but got no result. Due to my overweight situation I was suffering from a number other diseases which were not at all controllable even after medications. All I felt at that point of time was losing weight is the only answer to all my problems”, said the patient after losing almost 10 kilos post – surgery. She also added, “I feel great after losing 10 kilos, now I can walk by myself, don’t need to take insulin for blood sugar management and don’t need to use BiPAP every night to fall asleep. My only regret is not doing this surgery sooner”.
