Retroperitoneoscopic surgery performed at Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre

Friday ,October 18 ,2019 – A young man from Coochbehar visited the Urology OPD at Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre with complaint of recurrent pain in the right side of the abdomen and on & off fever lasting since 2 years, after investigation and evaluation it was found that he had a non – functioning right kidney which was a source of infection causing pain and fever thorough out the years. Even after visiting several centres for the last 2 years he did not get relief of his symptoms. When the pain became unbearable he decided to visit Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre. On consultation with Dr. Abhishek Kumar Singh, Urologist at Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre and a thorough understanding to cure the patient, it was eventually planned to remove his right kidney.

The right kidney was removed through Retroperitoneoscopic approach – a minimal invasive endoscopic surgical technique in which kidney is removed through three small holes from the back side of the abdomen. Retroperitoneoscopic surgery, is considered to be a very challenging minimal invasive procedure and is performed only in few cities by experienced surgeons and here at Neotia Getwel, this surgery was performed by Dr. Abhishek Kumar Singh, Urologist, supported by Anaesthesist Dr. Tirtha Sahoo.

The patient was discharged on the very next day. As compared to traditional open surgery where a patient has to stay in the hospital for 7 – 10 days. The benefits of Retroperitoneoscopic surgery involve faster recovery, less pain, minimal to no scar, early mobilisation & early discharge. The patient recovered very well and is expected to return to his work quickly.
