Baby Born at Just 26 Weeks Weighing 750g gets a new lease of life

Baby Born at Just 26 Weeks Weighing 750 g Finally Comes Home
It is a heart-touching battle of survival of a preemie baby from the moment she was born at 26 weeks on June 10th 2015, weighing just over 750 gm, until the day she went home on the auspicious day of Shree Krishna-Janmasthami . After an 88-day struggle with life under the expert care at Neonatal ICU of Neotia Getwel Multispecialty Hospital, the little wonder is at home with her family, happy and blooming.

The baby got weighed at discharge – she is up to 2.4 Kg, which means over 3 times her birth weight, a truly amazing gain. The treating Consultant Neonatologist at Neotia Hospital – Dr Poonam Singh & the entire team were determined from the word go and have witnessed the day-to-day development beyond the tubes, cords, and monitors. “I am grateful to the almighty for giving me an opportunity to serve the mankind” – is what Dr Poonam replied when asked, with utmost humility.

When the baby was born on June 10, her chances of survival were bleak. The reason? The baby weighed a mere 750 odd grams at birth, when a healthy baby should weigh between 2.5 and 3 Kg at birth. The survival rate for babies weighing between 400 g and 1 Kg at birth is a low 45 %. Actually, the problem, say doctors is not the baby’s weight at birth but the maturity at the time of birth . “There are more chances of saving a baby who weighs 500 gm and is born in the 30th week of gestation than one who weighs more but is born before the 28th week of gestation “said Dr Poonam – the Neonatologist at Neotia. But now, having spent the first three months under the best medical practise and management at Neonatal ICU of Neotia Getwel Multispecialty Hospital, the baby today upon discharge weighs approx 2.4 Kg and is ready to embrace the outside world.

The family of the baby was also standing rock solid all through with the NICU team and were determined to do everything it took to save the little angel. From the moment she was born at just 26th week and put on a ventilator – to – day 88th when their tiny daughter was healthy enough to be discharged from hospital, it is a indeed a dream come true for the proud parents- Deepa & Rajesh.
